Mauve, who was Vincent van Gogh's cousin by marriage and early mentor, found particular solace in painting these coastal scenes, returning frequently to the beaches near Scheveningen to observe the light's interplay with water and sky. "Mauve's particular genius lay in his ability to convey not just the visual aspects of a landscape but its emotional tenor—the quietude, melancholy, or in this case, the meditative quality of an early morning excursion," writes art historian John Sillevis.
