Modigliani's portrait of his lover and muse Jeanne Hébuterne with the elongated forms, her almond-shaped eyes and the muted palette are all characteristic of Modigliani's style. The artistic circles of post-war Paris were experiencing radical transformation, with Cubism, Dada and Surrealism challenging conventions, yet Modigliani remained somewhat apart, developing his distinctive style that synthesised multiple influences—from African masks to Botticelli, from Cycladic sculpture to Cézanne.
