Autumn Landscape
Peter Paul Rubens | probably 16360:007:05
Oil on oak, 131.2 × 229.2 cm
Located in room 20
This landscape emerged late in Rubens' career when, after decades as a court painter producing monumental historical and religious works, he returned to the countryside near his estate at Het Steen. After a life immersed in political intrigue and grand commissions, Rubens turned his masterful technique toward celebrating the humble rhythms of rural life – the harvested fields, the returning hunters, the simple pleasures of home.
